If you have a tight budget then it can make shopping difficult. This is because you will need to think about everything you buy and whether you are overspending. There are things that you can do that might help to make it easier.
Take a List
Taking a list can be a useful thing to do whether you are shopping in a supermarket or another shop. This is because you will find that you will be more easily able to remember what you are buying. This will help you to focus on buying those things and no extra items. Often, we will either be tempted to buy extras, not be sure if we need things and get them anyway or forget things and have to go back which increases our temptation to buy more things. Therefore taking a list can be extremely useful and help us to focus on only buying what we actually need.
Compare Prices Before you go
It can also be useful to make sure that you compare prices before you go shopping so that you are aware of where the items are the cheapest. It is easy to do this these days as you can just look online. Of course, comparing the price of every item from your weekly shop can be very time consuming, but if you are buying more expensive things it could make more of a difference. You could also try comparing a few things every week so you slowly swap over to buying form different places and spending less and less money each week.
Have an Amount in Mind
It is a good idea to have in mind an amount of money that you plan on spending. You need to think about whether you have a specific budget and how much you can afford to spend. If you do not have a specific budget then it can be a good idea to set one so that you are aware of how much you can afford to spend. When we go off shopping, if we have no amount in mind, this means that we might just buy all sorts of things without thought because we do not have a focus. We may also pay more for the items we are buying because we have no motivation to compare prices if we do not have a budget. You could even just take the amount of money that you have budgeted to spend with you so that you cannot spend more than this, however, this does rely on you using cash, which may not be practical.
Remind Yourself Why the Budget is important
It is a good idea to think hard about why it is so important to budget. Focus on your reasons for doing so. You must have a reason for deciding you want to budget – perhaps because you have loans to pay off or are saving for a holiday or other things. Make sure that you keep remembering why you are budgeting and this should help you to feel motivated. Particularly make sure that you remind yourself before you go out shopping then you will feel more focused and it will be easier to resist the temptation of shopping this way. It could even be a good idea to keep it written down on a piece of paper in your purse – perhaps in front of the credit card, so that you keep being reminded.
Shop Less Often
If you shop less often then you will not be tempted so often to buy things. Therefore, try to do all of your shopping in one go so that you do not have to keep going back to the shops all of the time. Online shopping can be more difficult as it is always there and so you may need to think of different ways to limit this. Perhaps it could be wise to allocate a certain day to shopping online, perhaps just once a month after you get paid and also allocate a budget.
